Crimson Room - Paintings and Film Screening by Gita Hudson

  • Gandhi Memorial Center 4748 Western Ave Bethesda, MD, 20816 United States (map)

About the Film Screening by Gita Hudson:

The Missing Rainbow - 35 mins

The Missing Rainbow showcases folk and tribal women artists of India. This film sheds light on the origins, aspirations, and lifestyles of the artists whose art forms have been passed down through generations. India’s heartbeat lies in its villages, small communities and tribal cultures. Raising awareness by promoting these art forms is integral to preserving this rich cultural heritage. It helps to revive and sustain the talents and livelihoods of these remarkable communities.

Black Mirror – The Art of C. Douglas - 7 mins

Like T.S. Eliot's The Hollow Men, Douglas' Figure also exhibits a 'paralyzed force', and stands like a modern man in a 'gesture without motion'. As an avid reader of modernist poetry and philosophy Douglas continuously registers their influence in his visuals, which is both a personal artistic statement as well as a critique of our times. The seamless integration and evocation of modernist poetry and philosophy is another definitive feature of Douglas' works that takes root in this period.

Abstract Art of Adhiveerapandian - 8 mins

Pandian's abstracts are easily recognizable for their character and style. He prefers to use larger-format surfaces, and the technique he uses to depict his amorphous ideas, impressions, and emotional responses creates a surreal idiom.

About the Artist and Filmmaker:

Trained in Art with a Masters degree in Psychology, Gita’s works have been part of many exhibitions since the early 90’s. She has consistently showcased her works in India and abroad. Her paintings are semi-abstract with the suggestion of female form, architecture, musical instruments, or some combination of these elements. They simultaneously explore color, texture, line and form, not as juxtapositions or layers but as integral to one another. For many years Gita was the Curator for Dakshinachitra Heritage Museum Galleries, Chennai, India.

Gita Hudson believes filmmaking is an extension of the fine arts and has documented famed contemporary Indian artists including eminent artists Prafulla Mohanti, Yusuf Arakkal, Achuthan Kudallur, C.Douglas and some of the senior painters who defined the Madras Art movement. Her documentaries have been screened in many film festivals.
