News from the Director
Spring 2010 It is our great joy to bring the message of Mahatma Gandhi through educational endeavors and creative cultural expressions. The Gandhi Memorial Center brings the light of this Great Soul to a community of global citizens of all ages and backgrounds. This Spring we offered for the second year a course for the members of the Osher Life-long Learning Institute of American University on "India: Culture, Traditions and Gandhi". For this 10 week course we invited a variety of presenters to introduce the participants to a range of topics related to Indian culture and Gandhian philosophy. Throughout the year we continue to present an introduction to Mahatma Gandhi and the arts of India through the Arts for Every Student Program of the DC Arts and Humanities Education Collaborative for the DC Public Schools. Recently, the Gandhi Memorial Center hosted a visit from a delegation from South and Central Asia under the auspices of the State Department International Visitor Leadership Program and organized by the World Learning Organization. The group was composed of artists, journalists and NGO workers visiting the United States for the first time with an effort to explore "Peace through the Arts". The pariticipants came from India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Tajikistan, Kyrgyz Republic and Turkmenistan. The group was introduced not only to the work and mission of the Gandhi Memorial Center but also to a network of local performing and visual artists. We have also recently enjoyed visits from the students of the Washington Semester in Peace and Conflict Resolution from American University, Washington, DC., the children of the Outdoor Nursery School of Chevy Chase, Maryland, the children of Crestview Montessori School of Bethesda, Maryland, Miner Elementary School of Washington, D.C., Paul Public Charter School of Washington, DC, and Center City Public Charter School of Capitol Hill, Washington, DC. In addition to school groups the following have also visited the Gandhi Memorial Center this spring: members of the Dulles, Virginia Chinmaya Mission, the participants in the American University Peacebuilding and Development Institute, and the Alumni of the American International School/American Embassy School of New Delhi, India. Later in July we look forward to to presenting a program for the children from the Greenbriar Learning Center of Arlington, Virginia. We invite you to participate, volunteer and support our efforts in presenting the life message of Mahatma Gandhi and the Indian cultural heritage.
